Selection of Garden Roses to Improve the Ecosystem Services They Provide

چکیده
With pronounced morphological and phenological diversity, garden roses have always been part of urban plantings. The significance in ornamental utilitarian (edible) horticulture can significantly be amended with novel ecosystem services, by shifting their breeding targets towards more than aesthetic nutritional value. Thus the aim this paper was to investigate possibilities newly bred (within past decade) from ‘Mella’ series as a possible ornamental, disease tolerant bee attracting cultivars recommended ecosystems, adding values current services. Research goals were determine characteristics; honey wild bees’ abundance its correlation rose floral resistance/tolerance main fungal diseases; suitability greenery providing multiple Plant material included seven series. Analyses complete morphological—qualitative quantitative characterization plant flower traits, fragrance panel scoring volatile components analyses, counts bees visiting flowers different species potential pollinators. Based on obtained results significant variability vegetative generative characteristics noted investigated roses. ‘naturalistic’ overall appearance, comparable roses, differed height habitus, number type flowers, leaf coloration glossiness, but ‘Barbie Mella’ ‘Ruby positioned most decorative ones. highly scored for fragrance, divergent records mixed compounds, characterized balanced ratio (almost 1:1:1) between aromatic alcohol + terpenoids, straight-chain alkanes long-chain alkanes. In relation bee’s attraction, combination height, (single, simple), diameter accessibility seems crucial, rather any characteristic solely. As an outstanding bee-attractor should promoted disease-tolerant cultivar. Due values, tolerance visitations, ‘Barbie’, ‘Ruby’, ‘Ducat’ ‘Exotic’ planted semi-natural gardens/landscapes, concomitantly contributing services—provisioning, regulating, cultural supporting. Until worldwide availability, other ‘Mella’-like cultivated likewise.

The Biodiversity of Urban and Peri-Urban Forests and the Diverse Ecosystem Services They Provide as Socio-Ecological Systems
Urban and peri-urban forests provide a variety of ecosystem service benefits for urban society. Recognising and understanding the many human–tree interactions that urban forests provide may be more complex but probably just as important to our urbanised society. This paper introduces four themes that link the studies from across the globe presented in this Special Issue: (1) human–tree interact...

A B S T R A C T The Garden of Chances is a computer-generated artwork which makes the link between the real world climate and a virtual garden of abstract colored shapes. When the artwork is functioning all day long and all year round, the spectator can see the evolution of the climate as the time passes by. The software has been developed as a simulation of a real ecosystem and it relies on mu...

Hypercarnivorous apex predator could provide ecosystem services by dispersing seeds
Large "hypercarnivorous" felids are recognized for their role as apex predators and hence as key elements in food webs and ecosystem functioning through competition and depredation. Here we show that cougars (Puma concolor), one of the largest and the most widely ranging apex felid predators with a strictly carnivorous diet, could also be effective secondary long distance seed dispersers, poten...
